VOLUNTEER FIRE ASSISTANCE GRANT FUNDS FOR RURAL COMMUNITY FIRE DEPARTMENTS AVAILABLE THROUGH DEM

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management, in cooperation with the US Forest Service and the RI Forest Fire Advisory Committee, announces the availability of grants for rural wild land fire suppression planning, training and equipment. The grants range in amounts from $1,000 to $5,000 and are being made available through the federal Volunteer Fire Assistance program.

Those eligible for the grants include single fire departments serving a rural area or community with a population of 10,000 or less. Area fire departments and fire districts that serve an aggregate population of greater than 10,000 are also eligible for the grants if their service area includes a rural area or community with a population of 10,000 or less.

Grant funds may be used for wild land personnel protective equipment, pumps and equipment used in wild land fire suppression; skid units; class A foam used in wild land fire suppression; equipment for foam application; hand or power tools used in wild land fire suppression; wild land forest fire training; and dry hydrants.

The grant program requires a 50 percent local match which can include cash, in-kind contributions, donations and administrative costs related to the project. Grant requests between $1,000 and $5,000 will be considered for projects ranging from $2,000 to $10,000 in total costs.

Eligible fire departments must submit the original and three copies of the grant application form, along with a one-page narrative proposal and a budget sheet, to DEM's Division of Forest Environment by 4 p.m. on February 19, 2010. The materials must be mailed to Paul Dolan, Deputy Chief, Division of Forest Environment, 1037 Hartford Pike, North Scituate, RI 02857. Electronic submissions will not be accepted.

For an application or grant related questions, please contact Paul Dolan at 647-3367. Downloadable applications are also available on DEM's website, www.dem.ri.gov, by clicking on "Topics" on the homepage, then "Grants", then "Volunteer Fire Assistance Program Grants Request".

Grant applications will be reviewed by DEM's Division of Forest Environment and the RI Forest Fire Advisory Committee. Final selections will be made by March 1, 2010 and projects must be completed by September 30, 2010.
